Power of Making at the V&A

I had the joy of going to see the new Power of Making exhibition at the V&A this weekend, and it was one of those exhibitions that makes you just feel happy in your soul.

The main theme of the show is 'the importance of being skilled', so for anyone who enjoys making either professionally or as a hobby the show will have resonance.  You come away with the feeling that practising, learning and developing your craft is a fundamental part of being human.

The range of exhibits and techniques on show is very eclectic from the Alphabet Tip pencils above by Dalton Ghetti to very functional pieces such as prosthetic limbs, wooden bicycles and a fantastic crocheted bear by Shauna Richardson.

I am hoping to go again with kids this time as any show that includes the Mr Fox puppet from Wes Andersens Fantastic Mr Fox and a giant gorilla made from silver coathangers isn't just for grown ups. Making is good....go see it!

A Little 'Made-to-Order' Loveliness

We recovered this Arkana stool for one of our lovely local customers, and are working on a bespoke basis more and more.

What usually happens is a visit to the studio to see an item from the website. This turns out to be not quite right, but then amongst the higgle and piggle of our studio they spot something that is ready and waiting to be transformed. And together with our collection of fabrics we try a few things out, stand & stare & scratch our chins...then turn it into something lovely.

Amongst our current higgledy-piggledy pile we have sofas, armchairs, footstools, and are happy to send pics of them in their current state if you would like a little 'made-to-order' loveliness for your own...please just ping us an email.

Every Cloud Has A Silver Lining!

The rain seems to keep coming and the silver lining is that I get to use the loveliest vintage umbrella in the world.

Found by Becky a while ago, it is one of the things I own that I love the most. B, being lovely, said that I should keep it rather than put it on the site. I have a thing for vintage umbrellas, it's the shape I think, and B would probably not have been the most long-term of owners as she has a good track record of 'not keeping her belongings with her at all times' so it would have been left in a cafe no doubt.

The combination of colour and pattern is really unusual and not ones you would choose to put together - but it just works. Thank you Becky!

Open by Appointment

Our studio in Chichester is very much a workspace rather than a shop, but we understand that many folk like to see before they buy. So you are more than welcome to visit by appointment if there is a particular item you are interested in, it's always lovely to meet our customers!

Please just email us at hello@wintersmoon.co.uk or call Julia on 07783 768503 to make a date.

Studio Sale - Jun '11

We opened the doors of our studio for the first time last weekend & had a PROPER lovely time!

It's been a while since we have had a sale in Chichester so it was very nice to see familiar faces, some of whom came to our very first sale about 5 years ago, and to meet new customers from the world of twitter & beyond.

We have shown a couple of pics above, but click here to see more.  We are intending to do another sale before the year is out so if you would like to come along, please join our mailing list to keep in the loop

Daisy Sparklers!

What else is there to do on a rainy Sunday than make Daisy Sparklers?

I found the kit at a sale along with another style that are due to go on the site sometime soon. Designed by Priscilla Lobley, who must have been the head honcho of the paper flower world in her day, they are very sweet and good fun to do. Even with a perfectionist 9 year old daughter!

A Big-Up from Big Cartel!

We are very honoured to have featured on the Big Cartel blog!

The feature is on vintage stores selling via Big Cartel sites and we are in good company as the others stores look great. We often get emails from people thinking of setting up a store and asking about our experience with BC & can't praise the format enough.

Our store has been up and running for roughly 3 years and we have never had a glitch or gremlin. Our site has been redesigned by The Neon Hive who,  we hope you will agree, did a fab job & know all there is to know about BC's format to make it your own, so if you are in need of some customisation they are the folk to talk to.

The Studio Sale Preparations Have Begun!

The date has been set for our studio sale so what better thing to do with the kids in half-term than get them to paint the studio floor?

The Most Beautiful Knitting Needle Case Ever....Fact!

We have had the pleasure to find and sell some very beautiful things, so thought that we share a few of our favourite pieces from time to time.

First up is this knitting needle case... and our title is due the fact that we can't think of anyway this case could have been any lovelier. The fabric was in great condition and a gorgeous mix of pinks and reds and it was beautifully made. However the real cherry on the cake was the printed numbers on each pocket, as we said the most beautiful knitting needle case ever....fact!

Jolly Good Show

We trundled up to Farnham Maltings at the weekend to tout our wares at their new event titled 'Vintage'. Whenever we set off for events we are never quite sure of what to expect, and Vintage turned out to be one of the best events we have done. The atmosphere and setting was really lovely (the weather helped of course), but more importantly the range of stands was really mixed so there was something of interest for everybody. There were dealers in furniture, textiles, fashion and ceramics specialising in practically every era from the 30's to the 70's.

The show was very busy with a good bustley feel and we bumped into old friends and made some new ones too - what more could you ask for?

Following are a few pics, which don't really do the day justice...but I had got up at stupid o'clock so my camera-work wasn't quite up to scratch unfortunately.

Gillopy Gallopy GO!

It's tricky to showcase a clockwork toy at its best as static photos just don't do them justice.  As good as they look, they are built to wizz, jump or in the case of this toy, gallop! With our limited technological capabilities we have managed to give our lovely clown & horsey their 15 minutes in the spotlight, click here to see the result. Oscar nominations are anticipated for 2012!
